Apple today released Safari 4.0.3 via Software Update, offering fixes for several stability and performance issues, as well as security updates. The new version is also available on Apple’s Safari download page.
This update is recommended for all Safari users and includes improvements to stability, compatibility and security including:
- Stability improvements for webpages that use the HTML 5 video tag
- Fixes an issue that prevented some users from logging into iWork.com
- Fixes an issue that could cause web content to be displayed in greyscale instead of color

According to the associated security support document, the update addresses a half-dozen security vulnerabilities, two of which are specific to Windows affecting CoreGraphics and ImageIO and the remainder affecting Safari and WebKit on all platforms.

The 10.5.8 Update is recommended for all users running Mac OS X Leopard and includes general operating system fixes that enhance the stability, compatibility and security of your Mac, as well as specific fixes for:

A developer build (9L30) of OS X 10.5.8 seeded last week carried only a single increment in build number from the previous seed and listed no outstanding issues, suggesting that work on OS X 10.5.8 was rapidly nearing completion.

Την ξαφνική του παραίτηση από το διοικητικό συμβούλιο της Apple υπέβαλε ο Έρικ Σμιτ, διευθύνων σύμβουλος της Google εξαιτίας της «σύγκρουσης συμφερόντων» μεταξύ των δύο εταιρειών.
Ο διευθύνων σύμβουλος της Apple, Στιβ Τζομπς, δήλωσε ότι «και οι δύο πλευρές» συμφώνησαν ότι η παρούσα φάση αποτελεί τη σωστή χρονική στιγμή για την αποχώρηση του Σμιτ.
Ήδη από το Μάιο, οι αμερικανικές αρχές είχαν αναφέρει ότι ενδεχομένως ο διπλός ρόλος του Ερ.Σμιτ να χρήζει εξέτασης.
Ο Σμιτ ήταν μέλος του ΔΣ της Apple από το 2006, και η παραίτησή του έρχεται ενώ οι αμερικανικές αρχές εξετάζουν το ενδεχόμενο έρευνας για το εάν οι δεσμοί Apple και Google αποθαρρύνουν τον ανταγωνισμό. Εν τω μεταξύ, στο ΔΣ της Αpple παραμένει ένα άλλο υψηλόβαθμο στέλεχος της Google, o Αρθουρ Λέβινσον.
Ανάμεσα στις δύο εταιρείες δεν λείπουν όμως οι ανταγωνισμοί. Η Google έχει λανσάρει το δικό της λειτουργικό σύστημα για κινητά, το Android, το οποίο ανταγωνίζεται το iPhone OS της Αpple.
Επίσης, η Apple πρόσφατα απέρριψε την εφαρμογή Google Voice για το iPhone, προκαλώντας την παρέμβαση της Ομοσπονδιακής Επιτροπής Τηλεπικοινωνιών, η οποία ζητά τώρα ενημέρωση από τις δύο εταιρείες.
